Blogs with great subtitles

I read lots and lots of blogs. I only do this because it is my hope that by doing so I fall in line with the overall demographics of blog readers.

Today I want to highlight the oft overlooked but oh so important blog subtitle. Also known as the tag line it was invented in 1972 by Ralph P. Siunsinn. Ok not really, but it is important, because in the 50 milliseconds that someone takes to evaluate your site you better say something snappy and cool.

Here are five that are worth noting.

  1. “Where Nothing Beats a Good Rank.”David Naylor

  2. “Blogger. n. Someone with nothing to say writing for someone with nothing to do.”Guy Kawasaki

  3. “I’m feeling lucky today.”Jim Boykin

  4. Gettin hit by traffic. . .not cars.Stuntdubl

  5. THIS IS GETTING REALLY HARD – Me

I gotta go figure out how to write table-less CSS.

Ok, here’s my ratings for each of these taglines:

    1. Short and to the point, if lacking in humor hooking power. 65%
    2. Yes it’s funny, but it doesn’t exactly sell the site. I wouldn’t have read more if I didn’t already know who Guy was. 40%
    3. This is awesome: this apparently fruity, carefree caption is actually a wink to the Google-conscious crowd. Brilliant. 92%
    4. Maybe it’s just my absurdist sense of humor, but I find this very funny, and also very much on topic. 94%
    5. I couldn’t score this higher than 3 & 4 even though I wanted to. It makes me laugh, but is it just because I know the author? No, I think this punchline is some universal appeal. Truth is, SEO & webmarketing, as evolving disciplines, are getting really hard. 91%
    6. The punchline for this site wasn’t mentioned, I note. I give us (and I’m being humble) at least an 89%.
    7. And what about Mymotech’s “Analytics, SEO & Stuff?” It’s not a knee slapper, but it sure gets the point across. It gets at least a 75%.
